Employees of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin worked to turn their frequent business trips into an opportunity to help homeless Vietnam veterans.
Attorneys and paralegals from the firm have been traveling extensively throughout the country as part of their work on the landmark In re Black Farmers Discrimination Litigation (case number, 08-mc-0511 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia) that involves tens of thousands of black farmers and those who attempted to farm. Employees collected toiletries from their hotel stays for this and other cases and donated those items for a good cause.
Attorneys Stephen Coe and Tara Williams worked on the effort with the American Red Cross. Volunteers used the toiletries to create 100 Comfort Kit bags, which were distributed to homeless Vietnam Veterans at the USO-sponsored Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration in Charlotte on March 31.
In a short amount of time, the firm gathered additional items needed for the bags. A local Harris Teeter in Durham, led by Store Manager Dennis Pelletier, contributed to the effort by donating all the shaving gel, deodorant, and toothpaste available in stock. The store even provided credit to apply towards the purchase of additional items.
After a firm-wide effort to assemble the bags, the Comfort Kit Bags were given to homeless Vietnam veterans at the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, one of the sponsors of the event. The celebration was sponsored by the USO and other sponsors as a way to honor Vietnam veterans to give them the proper homecoming celebration they never received when they returned home from service so many years ago.
During the event, veterans and their family and friends were able to enjoy a variety of activities such as entertainment from the Charlie Daniels band and George Clinton.
